90-second urge reset

Do not decide while the feeling is peaking.

Put your phone down on its back. You can still choose later. For the next 90 seconds, the only job is to create space between the urge and the send button. Nothing you type here is saved or sent.

01:30

Place both feet on the floor. Let your shoulders drop.

Short answer

The urge to text your ex is a craving that usually rises, peaks and eases if you do not act on it. A 90-second reset puts a pause between the urge and the send button: you breathe, name the feeling and write the message without sending it. The tool runs the timer, the prompts and a private unsent box.

Why do I feel like I have to text my ex right now?

Because rejection can switch on the same systems that drive cravings. In a 2010 study by Fisher and colleagues, people who had recently been rejected by a partner showed activity in reward and motivation regions when they looked at a photo of that person. A 2011 study by Kross and colleagues found that recalling an intense romantic rejection engaged regions that also respond to physical pain.

Both studies were small and laboratory-based, so treat them as an explanation, not a measurement of you. The useful part is simple: the urgency is a sign that you are hurting, not proof that contact is necessary. Read more in how to stop texting your ex.

What is the 90-second reset, and what does each part do?

It is designed to be simple enough to use when your judgement is at its weakest. Press start, put the phone down on its back, and let the prompts do the thinking.

  • The timer counts down from 90 seconds, and the progress bar fills as time passes.
  • Prompts appear at 75, 55, 35 and 15 seconds. They ask you to breathe out slowly, name the feeling without arguing with it, consider what you need tonight that a reply cannot guarantee, and end on the reminder that you can want contact and still choose space.
  • The trigger menu asks what happened just before the urge. Naming the trigger makes patterns visible over time.
  • The unsent box holds the message exactly as it feels. Nothing leaves this page.

How long does the urge to text your ex last?

Nobody can give you a number, and it varies with the trigger. A pause does not cure the feeling. It creates a window in which the urge can rise, peak and pass without deciding your next move.

Watching an urge without acting on it is sometimes called urge surfing. A 2009 trial by Bowen and Marlatt found that brief instruction in it helped college students who smoked cut down, which is a different habit but the same skill. The table matches common triggers to a first move for the 90 seconds.

What should I do with the unsent message?

Write it exactly as it feels, without editing for tone. Pennebaker’s 1997 work on expressive writing linked writing about emotional experiences with benefits across a range of studies, so writing can help even if you never send a word.

When the timer ends, read the message once and ask whether it needs something only the other person can give. If it does, that is a strong sign to wait. The tool does not save or send what you write, and it clears when you leave the page. For a longer format, how to write an unsent letter gives a structure to use later.

What if-then plans help me resist texting my ex?

Decide in advance what you will do, while you are calm. Gollwitzer’s 1999 paper on implementation intentions found that specific if-then plans help people follow through on goals. Write one or two now.

  • If I feel the urge to text after 10 p.m., then I will start the 90-second reset and put my phone in another room.
  • If I see their name on my screen, then I will close the app and text a friend one word.
  • If I catch myself rereading old messages, then I will write one sentence about what I need.

What if the urge keeps coming back?

It will, especially in the early weeks. Each reset is another repetition of the same skill. If the phone itself is the problem, add friction: how to block yourself from texting someone covers settings that put a deliberate step before a message can go out.

If the urge comes with a sense that you cannot cope, or with thoughts of hurting yourself, this is more than an urge. Call or text 988 in the US, call Samaritans on 116 123 in the UK or Ireland, or call Tele-MANAS on 14416 in India. The safety page has more.

What if I text them anyway?

Then the urge won one round, not the whole argument. Write down what set it off, then read what to do if you break no contact and decide where your count restarts.

UnLink, a free no-contact tracker for iPhone, has real-time urge support for the minute the pull is strongest, plus mood and trigger logging so you can see which situations lead to it. Relapse-safe restarts keep your history after a slip.

Common questions

What is the 90 second rule for texting your ex?

It is a short pause in which you breathe, name the feeling and do not act on the urge. Intense urges often peak and then ease, so waiting gives you room to choose your next step.

Why do I want to text my ex so badly?

Recent rejection can activate reward and craving-related brain systems, so the pull can feel urgent. That intensity shows you are hurting. It does not prove that contact is necessary or that it would help.

How do I stop myself from texting my ex at night?

Decide before bed, not in the moment. Put the phone out of reach, write an if-then plan, and keep the 90-second reset a tap away. Night lowers your guard, so friction helps more than willpower.

Does the 90 second reset actually work?

It is a practical pause, not a guaranteed fix. It can help you separate the feeling from the action, and repeating it builds the skill. It is not therapy and does not replace professional support if you need it.

What should I do instead of texting my ex?

Write the message in full and leave it unsent, message a friend, move your body, or put the phone in another room for ten minutes. Our guide on what to do instead of texting your ex has a longer list.

Is writing a text I never send a good idea?

Often, yes. Writing can ease the pressure to say it aloud. Notice whether it settles the urge or winds it up, and if it winds it up, stop and do something physical instead.

Is my unsent message saved anywhere?

No. The reset tool does not save or send what you write. It clears when you leave the page, and you can delete it earlier with the button.

What if I text them anyway?

Breaking your own boundary is not the end of your progress. Note what happened and what triggered it, then decide where to restart your count. One slip does not erase what you have already protected.
